Queen Elizabeth death and Double Rainbow Spotted Near Buckingham Palace
QUEEN ELIZABETH II stories of life, death and signs
Queen Elizabeth II has died "peacefully" at age 96 after being placed on medical supervision, according to Buckingham Palace.
Members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday to be at the British monarch's side. Buckingham Palace said the new King and Queen Consort will stay at Balmoral Thursday evening before heading back to London on Friday.
UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who met with the Queen Tuesday, was one of several world leaders who expressed her concern about the monarch's health earlier Thursday before the palace confirmed her death.
The 96-year-old Queen was Britain's longest reigning monarch. She celebrated her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year to mark 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
As crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace, photos and videos began to emerge of a double rainbow that appeared near the palace Thursday evening.
Videos shared on social media showed that the double rainbow could be seen by people who were standing with their backs to the palace. Many had gathered beneath umbrellas throughout the rainy afternoon in anticipation of news about the queen.
The Queen, born in 1926, was 96 year's old. She recently celebrated her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
She began her reign in 1952 after the death of her father, King Edward VIII.
The Queen leaves behind four children, including the heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, including Prince William and Prince Harry, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died last year.
During her reign, she met with 15 Prime Ministers, including her first, Winston Churchill. There have also been 14 U.S. presidents during her time on the throne, from Harry Truman to Joe Biden.
